UCAS: how a student from our region applies to British universities

In Britain you do not apply university by university. There is one gateway, UCAS, and its deadlines are not negotiable.

What UCAS actually is

UCAS is the central body that receives undergraduate applications for nearly every British university. You complete one file — your details, your qualifications, your personal statement and a school reference — and it reaches every university you chose at once.

That means the quality of one file decides five outcomes. There is no second, better version to send to a different university.

Five choices, no more

UCAS allows a maximum of five choices in the main round. You may not apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same year — you pick one. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science are capped at four choices, and the fifth is normally kept for a back-up subject.

  • Two ambitious choices — where you need both luck and an excellent result.
  • Two realistic choices — where your predicted grades match the published offer.
  • One safety choice — an offer below your predicted grades, so you are never left without a place.

The deadlines that decide everything

For entry in September 2027 the date still open is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time (20:00 in Israel) for most courses. The date for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses was 15 October 2026, and it has passed. The dates move every year, so always check the official dates page on UCAS.

The most common mistake we see here is not weak grades — it is lateness: a family starting in February on a course whose door closed in October.

Bagrut and Tawjihi students: the difference nobody mentions

British universities read every certificate against A-Levels. The good news for Bagrut students is that many universities admit them straight into year one with a high average and several 5-unit subjects. Manchester, for example, treats an 87.5% average with three 5-unit subjects as AAA, and Bristol asks for 80% to 90% with three 5-unit subjects at 75 or more in each.

Tawjihi is usually read as one year short of A-Levels, so the usual route is a foundation year and then the degree, except at a few universities that accept a very high average. Either way, the deciding rule is the one the university itself publishes for that course.

The personal statement

The personal statement is the only part of the file you fully control. British readers scan it for evidence of genuine academic interest in the subject itself — a book you read, a project you built, work experience, a problem that kept you up — not general self-praise. UCAS recently restructured it into three guided questions instead of one open essay; the substance is unchanged: evidence, not claims.

After you submit

Offers arrive gradually and are either conditional on a specific result, or unconditional. In the end you hold one firm choice and one insurance choice with lower conditions. Anyone without an offer moves to Extra, and then to Clearing in the summer once results are out.

After the offer: the Student visa in numbers

We do not give immigration advice; we give you the official document checklist and go through it with you. These are the GOV.UK figures as of October 2026, and they change from time to time:

  • Visa application fee from outside the UK: £558.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 for each year of the visa.
  • Living money to show: £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 elsewhere, for up to nine months (£13,761 or £10,539), held for 28 days in a row.
  • After graduating: the Graduate route lasts 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027.
