If you are thinking of medicine for 2027 entry
Medicine for 2027 entry is closed to new applicants: UCAT booking closed on 16 September 2026, and the UCAS medicine deadline was 15 October 2026, which has passed. Anyone starting now plans for 2028 entry, and that time is an advantage, not a loss: a full year to prepare for the test and build work experience.
Why medicine is Britain's hardest door
Because the number of places open to international students at British medical schools is capped at each school — typically around 7.5% of places. You are not competing for a seat among thousands; you are competing for a small, pre-set quota.
The timeline
- Spring: register for the UCAT and arrange practical experience in a hospital, clinic or care setting.
- Summer: sit the UCAT and write the personal statement.
- Mid-October (15 October in 2026, for 2027 entry): the UCAS medicine deadline — earlier than every other subject.
- November to March: interviews, usually in the multiple mini-interview (MMI) format.
UCAT: what it actually measures
It is not a medical knowledge test. It measures verbal and quantitative reasoning, decision making, abstract reasoning and situational judgement — under severe time pressure. That is good news for a diligent student: most of it is trainable, and the gap between a first attempt and one after three months of practice is large.
Work experience is not a detail
British medical schools want evidence that you understand the reality of the profession, not its image. A single week in a hospital is not enough on its own; regular volunteering in a care home or patient charity over months is far stronger, because it shows commitment rather than curiosity.
Alternatives worth taking seriously
Biomedical science, pharmacy, advanced nursing, or medicine in the UAE and Europe. Some students enter biomedical science and move into graduate-entry medicine afterwards. That is not a concession — it is a genuine second road to the same profession.
The cost
Medicine is the most expensive subject for international students, because the clinical years are costly and the degree itself runs five or six years. Ask every school for the fee schedule for all years, not just the first, before deciding.
